Cheek Implants
The
projection, length, and width of the face is given by the facial
bone structure. The facial bones are fixed together to give us
an identification information of the person we are observing,
where racial, family, and symmetry characteristics are shaped
three-dimensionally.
The width of the face is given by the cheek and jaw bones, When
a young patient comes to our office, because he or she feels
there cheeks are “falling”, it is very possible that the cheek
bones are not wide enough and they don’t have the necessary
projection to sustain the cheek, which slides down as a curtain,
making the patient appear older than his or her actual age.
If prior to the metric analysis we diagnose molar
hypoplasy,
then, the use of implants is one of the possible treatments,
this procedure will replace the amount of volume which is
lacking to give the face the necessary width and the
appropriate projection so it can suspend the muscles, fat and
the cheek skin.
The surgery is performed by introducing a couple of
prefabricated silicon implants, with the proper dimensions for
each case. The implants are placed under the cheek muscles, so
they can’t be delimitated from the exterior.
Some of the routes for the introduction are:
1. Transbucal, osseous approach, through the superior bucal
crease at each side.
2. Transcunjuctival, osseous approach, through the inferior
eyelid conjunctiva
3. Endoscopically, through the forehead hair line.
The surgery is performed in the operating room under sedation
and local anesthesia, the patient goes home the same day, there
is no removal of stitches.
After the surgery a week vacation is necessary.
When the patient is correctly diagnosed and chosen, the outcome
is a better projection of the cheeks with the sensation of
youth.
