F.A.Q: AESTHETIC RINOPLASTY

1-. WHO HAVE MORE RHINOPLASTIES PERFORMED, MEN OR WOMEN?

Without a doubt, women are the ones who mostly get surgery for an aesthetic change of the nose, but it’s necessary to know that the number of male patients is increasing each day, because of high percentage of rinoseptal deviation as the consequence of accidents.

2.- WHY IS RHINOPLASTY ONE OF THE MOST FREQUENT SURGERIES? 

The face is our principal physical identification in the world of visual communication. It’s capable of summarizing in an instant our race, ancestry, culture, and personality. Since the nose is the centric and most prominent anatomical structure in our face, when we make a physical auto-analysis it’s the first we notice. In this analysis, the comparing standards of beauty are always present in the attentive and conscious human being. Knowing that some nasal characteristic are easily modified and manipulated to take them to ideal standards, prompt the human being to make the decision to have this aesthetic surgery performed, thus the high frequency of this procedure.

3.- WHICH IS THE MAIN REQUIREMENT TO KNOW IF I AM A RINOPLASTY CANDIDATE?

 4.- HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR SURGERY?  

Being healthy and staying healthy before the surgery is fundamental. Having all the tests your surgeon requires done is very important as a previous step to the evaluation of your case.

Keeping calm and trusting your surgeon is important, as is having, a clear understanding of the changes you wish to accomplish with the surgery. 

5.- WHAT TEST SHOULD I HAVE DONE BEFORE THE SURGERY?

You will need exams which include: hematic biometry, profiles of coagulation, glycemia,  and liver (hepatic) function.

Also an electrocardiogram with evaluation of surgical risks done by a cardiologist you trust.

6.- HOW LONG DOES THE PROCEDURE TAKE AND HOW IS IT DONE?

The surgery is performed in the hospital’s operating room, under sedation and local anesthesia, making the nasal changes takes approximately an hour.  Aesthetic Rhinoplasty consist in modifying the shaper of the nose, through small incisions or openings which are made inside the nose, this way no scars are really noticeable.

7.- WHAT COMPLICATIONS CAN THIS SURGERY HAVE IN THE POSTOPERATIVE?

If you are healthy and have chosen a good surgeon, there should be no complications; on the contrary, there should be an aesthetic and functional improvement.

8.- FOR HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO WEAR THE SPLINT ON MY NOSE?

The average time the new nose has to be immobilized with a splint is one week, time necessary to let it heal well.

9.- WILL I WEAR NASAL PLUGS?

I personally use nasal plugs only in noses that need a correction of the rhinoseptal deviation, and the time the patient uses the plugs is according to the seriousness of the deviation. It could be from one day to a one week. 

10.-WHEN CAN I GO BACK TO WORK? 

Three days after the operation you can go back to work, if it doesn’t bother you that you will be seen with the splint, if so, you can go back after a week when the splint has been removed.

11.- HOW OFTEN AFTER THE SURGERY WILL I HAVE TO GO FOR CHECK-UPS?

I see my patients a week, a month, 6 months, and a year after the surgery.
